ComicShop.net project reaching beta

Anyone own a comic book shop interested in being in my beta site? Anyone?

Finally finished the first round of bug fixes this morning after going live yesterday. In the front, it’s closed, but it’s up there, and seem to be working. So yay!

The initial set up in getting a shop on the site is a little rough. I think for now, I’ll be hand-holding during the onboarding process. I found out some bugs right away, added them to the list. I learned some differences between my dev server and the live server… good to know.

It’s funny, the timing of going live is pretty good. I’ve discovered several comic shops that are doing really creative events and projects on their own, and they are never talked about by the blogs. Also watching on particular blogger royally blow up at Richard on twitter for being called out for what I think is totally legit (for the record, that blogger has brought more focus to shop this year than previous, but good god, act professional).

Now it’s pitch time. Convincing stores to sign up and add their events and blogs to my site.

Wish me luck!

The Variants: Think Bigger

Now in HD!

<lj-embed id="100" />

Our season 2 premier of The Variants is here! And watch all the episodes of The Variants at their site. Great design, btw.

Our title is very apt now that this season is uses HD which means a ton more more disk space, and a slower computer. The good news is that editing and adding special effects is actually a lot easier with HD footage. Next up is the music video and Episode 2. It never ends.

SXSW

I'm trying to find a way to justify a trip to SXSW this year. I think I'd have fun, but I'm not sure what I'd gain from it. These conventions remind me of the fandom that comes from seminars and bloggers that are more about talking technology than writing or creating technology. I know some very smart and talented folks that can run circles around the tech-heads we celebrate. They too have blogs, but they aren't popular--they're busy.

So going to SXSW would be more of that. And the time I'm there is time I'm not working, building.

But it still looks like a lot of fun.

The road ahead

I'm almost back on track. After I get my iMac back from repair, I still have to reinstall everything. I don't look forward to the net few months of discovering what I didn't back up onto dvd. I'm already dealing with that now.

When I started out, I assumed that this would be just like that ol' cd-rom I did on Adobe Premier back in '97. How hard could it be? While I can't replace the YouTube vids with improved/better edited versions now that I've spent time learning and bettering my skill anymore than I can ask the cast and crew redo trouble scenes, I can move forward and begin preparations to offer the episodes on dvd.

That's something I look forward to. It'll be a couple of months of re approaching the entire season with a more complete version of the shows (10 minute rule really limited the content we could offer) and done with an eye for television viewing.

How hard can it be?

So here is part one of The Variants web series debut season finale.

<lj-embed id="94" />

From what I saw, this is what I took away from the iPad launch.

- No wireless update.
- No camera.
- Display will be just as dim in sunlight as the iPhone.
- At 1.0 the interface is lacking anything revolutionary.
- No pen input option.
- No pressure sensitivity.
- Doesn't support full HD.
- 1024 resolution is a bare bones resolution.
- Locked OS, no normal Mac OS version.

All that said, a $500 option for replacing my 5 yo PowerBook is a really good option. But what I'd really like it to hack the hell out of it in a separate boot mode.

You can't have my money anymore

Back in 2000, I voted for Al Gore. I didn't want to. I wanted Ralph Nader. This was in Oregon where Nader was really popular--for at least 5% of us. The election could have gone to Bush had it not been for enough politically minded bean counters who saw the possible result of splitting the vote and advocated for Gore.

My friends warned me of the doom and gloom to follow a Bush victory. They told how bad it would be for LGBT equality. So I voted for Gore. In the end, Gore barely won Oregon.

The lesson learned was that a third party is a dangerous thing to Democrats and Republicans.

Last year, I voted for Obama. He was going to be our fierce advocate. We would se an end to DOMA and DADT.

Nothing has happened. There has been no measurable progress in these areas at all. In many respects, things are now worse. Obama has openly mocked protesters, his justice department has defended anti-gay laws, police are unlawfully arresting people like in the days of Stonewall, state marriage laws are eroding away.

As a community, we're told to be patient. That the president has a lot on his plate. To that I say, one thing to can do to take things off your plate is to repeal DADT. It literally takes more effort keeping that policy in effect than it does to stop enforcing it. I also expect my government to multi-task.

To all this, I've decided that until my party starts actively--and fiercely--advocating for us, they can't have my money nor my vote. We've giving them all of our support (save LCR) to no avail. I don't see the point.

Same goes for you assholes at HRC.
