SDCC should be fun [Jul. 19th, 2008|10:29 am]

Dear artists and creators going to SDCC, this is your once a year opportunity to make some serious bank from your fans and other attendees. You should be focussed more on that and less on what is best for us.

This is a protest
SDCC 2006, protest in front of City Hall to stop war between Israel and Hizbullah.
I'm not sure how much revenue hotels generate from liquor sales (compared to actual room charges), but I do know that the folks working at those hotel bars stake their livelihood on wages and tips. Just because it's always sunny in San Diego doesn't mean folks stop worrying about living month to month.

It's ridiculous to expect boycotting a bar to have any sort of financial impact on a hotel whose rooms are completely booked. How about this? Cancel your room reservations and sleep in the parks in front of the hotel. That would be a GREAT way to make a statement. Who's up for it? Anyone?

This is not a protest
SDCC 2006 having a tasty treat at San Diego's best margarita bar, The Lime.

Of the folks that I know are attending SDCC, it appears that the straight crowd seems more affected by this than us queers. In fact, it's more likely that the gays will be even gayer and louder at the Hyatt and Marriott because of Prop 8. Last I heard, this year's love-in/how-many-bears-can-fit-in-a-room is a go.

Please don't misunderstand me; I'm all for consumer action. I don't eat at Chik-fil-a for their creepy ties to Focus on The Family. I buy local foods to support nearby farms and save on energy. I support my local comic book shop (in a multitude of ways). I stay aware of who benefits from my business, but I also pick my battles.

Lastly, there is so much to do at this year's SDCC, it's amazing! It is already sold out. It is so massive and over crowded, it's going to implode on itself. As long as you're going to be a part of the crazyness, try to enjoy it.

Cheers.

I think I have one without a drink within camera shot. Then again, they were taken outside a bar!

A pity it is that you and the honey cannot attend SDCC this year.

I'd go to the Hyatt to watch you two tie the knot.

(I'd bring my own liquor, though.)

Wouldn't that be the ultimate thing!

I'd insist on wearing super hero outfits too.

I think it was last year, one of the Oni artists carried around a hip flask at al times. This should be part of the SDCC survival kit.

It's not often I disagree with you so profoundly, Chris, but here we go.

The fact is that, as booked as hotels are and as long the waiting lists, if a hundred people canceled their reservations, life at the Hyatt would go on.

But if you inhibit the bar revenue -- high-profit business -- the hotel will notice. Yes, you'll cost the employees some tips. And that's unfortunate. But every bigoted company has employees depending on it.

As for being political when you should be partying: eating is political, when they don't want you sitting at the lunch counter. Riding the bus is political, when they want you sitting in the back. Raising kids is political, when they want to deny you the right to. Breathing is political, when they wish you'd just stop doing it.

I'm not sure I think BOOM! is taking the right tack, but it's the one they've chosen and I support them on it. So I urge everyone who's going there to dress flamboyantly (but legally), act outrageously (but legally), and tip generously (with bills indelibly labeled as GAY MONEY).

Getting gays to agree is like herding cats.

I think this is a tremendous opportunity for Prism Comics to express their opinion. I know that they do not venture into the political arena, but they are the default face of the lgbt community in comics. When I emailed someone on their board to confirm the BOOM! press release, they refused to be sourced.

BOOM! is, as of right now, the only "group" doing anything organized around this issue.

Who'd you mail?

There's some disagreement on the board as to whether we should support outright boycott, support the party... or if we're just too busy putting the con together. I'm glad BOOM! is doing something too. And I'm still touching base with the rest of the board on it. But I've given my personal opinion above, and am happy to do so on the record.

It was the Shaun.

You guys are doubling your space this year I heard. Major congrats on that! Personally, I would love to see Prism bring awareness to this issue.

If you don't get the details on the other "party" mentioned above, I'll have my people contact your people. Though I'm sure with Matty going, you'll know all about it. ;-)
